Abstract
This study aimed to identify the level of health literacy and associated factors among Korean older adults using Andersen¡¯s health behavior model. We collected data in October-November, 2012, using a self-administered questionnaire. 640 older adults aged 65 and older were sampled and a total of 596 subjects were analyzed for further analyses. The following influencing variables were selected based on Andersen¡¯s behavioral model of health literacy: predisposing factors(age, gender, marital status, place of residence), enabling factors(education level, literacy level, family income, job, social support), and need factors(self-rated health status, number of chronic comorbidities). Using a hierarchical logistic regression model, we found that age and single status among predisposing factors were inversely associated with health literacy. For enabling factors, educational attainment, literacy level, and family income had positive relationships with health literacy, when controlling for other pertinent factors. This study suggests that community-based health literacy programs should prioritize and educate those with a lower level of health literacy.
